Joseph B. Cumming, a mayor of Augusta, Georgia, delivered this address during the memorial service for Archibald W. Butt. (September 26, 1865-April 15, 1912) Butt, an Augusta native, served as a military aide to two presidents, President Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. He met his demise on the sinking of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. The Butt Memorial Bridge span the Augusta Canal as part of 15th street and was dedicated to the memory of Archibald Butt.
