Biographical / Historical

Material was transferred from the Augusta Museum of History in 2022.

Material may have been compiled by C. Barry Whitney (Charles Barry Whitney Jr) (b. 1928- July 24, 2020) C. Barry Whitney was descended from Eli Whitney the inventor of the cotton gin and Porter Alexander from his mother’s side. During his professional life he served as president of the S.W. Whitney Company, founded by his family in 1868, and closing for business in 2012 making it the oldest cotton factor and cotton warehouse in Augusta, Georgia. Mr. Whitney was also president of the Augusta Fertilizer Company, the Whitney Grain Company, and the Cotton Exchange of Augusta. He served as a director of the Georgia Railroad and Banking company and Vice President of the Georgia Cotton Warehouse Association. He was an officer in several charities; a president of the Augusta Gideons Association and the Kiwanis Club of Uptown Augusta as well as Chairman of the Augusta Area Young Life Association.
