Biographical / Historical

Presented to the Augusta Library by Miss Nelle Harper and Dr. W.J. Burdashaw J. Louis Sayre (August 8, 1879-March 28, 1962) A native of Augusta and known at one time as “Augusta’s Own” composer, Sayre had an active music career in Augusta from 1902-1931. The Camp Hancock March, meant to celebrate the army post of the same name was only one of his compositions. Sayre held a variety of positions; organist of St. Paul’s Church, organist of both the Imperial and Modjeska Theaters, director of the Georgia Railroad Band and band director of the Academy of Richmond County. Sayre moved to Atlanta in 1931.
