The library bound edition was moved to special collections when the new headquarters building at 823 Telfair Street was opened in June of 2010. The loose issue, dated 9 April 1964 was also moved to special collections at the time of the opening. Both were previously held in the “locked cases” opposite the reference desk at the former library building at 902 Greene Street. The bound edition was issued a call number (GR 050 S) and affixed with a barcode and RFID tag, but never processed in the PINES catalog.
From the Digital Library of Georgia:
“The Southern Field and Fireside, founded in 1859, was an agricultural and literary paper published in conjunction with the Augusta Constitutionalist. Colonel James Gardner, publisher of both, intended for the paper to supplement the Constitutionalist with additional information. With the help of press manager John L. Stockton and editor W. W. Mann, the Southern Field and Fireside was remarkably able to maintain publication throughout the civil war. Despite this success, Gardner sold the publication to Mr. Smith of Raleigh North Carolina in 1864 and the paper would eventually cease publication by 1865.”
In 1865, the Constitutionalists offices were at 101 Broad Street (Augusta City Directory, 1865). Gardiner is listed as Gardiner, James T, warehouse & com’n, 12 McIntosh, h cor Lincoln and Broad. (Augusta City Directory, 1865).
