Biographical / Historical
Gilbert Buford Dickey, born in Nashville, Tennessee, on Oct. 26, 1921, attended Vanderbilt University and Cumberland University (Lebanon,TN) and received a B.A. and law degree. He also received a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and served as a Lt. U.S.N.R. (U.S. Navy Reserve) four years during WWII. After the war, Dickey joined his father in distribution and sales with Shell Oil.
Upon his father’s death, Gilbert took over and made it the largest Shell distributor in the United States. He sold that company, established advertising and marketing companies, and then got into residential development. His companies took several forms and went under various names including Monda Management, PSI, Inc., Green Watch Associates, Inc., and Earth Services Organization. In addition to running a successful advertising agency, he became a real estate specialist, and was a licensed real estate broker in North Carolina.
Dickey had became involved in the “new town” concept and did some marketing for Peachtree City, Georgia as of early 1973, through his firm Earth Services Organization (ESO), then located in Ft.Lauderdale, Florida. In Peachtree City the company was located in Clover Reach Office Park and they discussed building something permanent there since they had other projects in the Southeast. Although the company’s Director of Marketing, Ronald Ive, was active in Peachtree City through at least July 1973, the permanent building
did not come to pass. ESO oversaw the advertising, sale of lots and the sale of Twiggs Corner Condominiums. They planned to build other condominiums in Peachtree City, including Cobblestone Creek.
Dickey also wrote and directed documentaries, and self-published some novels. He was interested in psychotherapy, and at one point was involved in psychotherapy institutes in Florida. His residences included Nashville and Sewanee, Tennessee, Ft.Lauderdale and Orlando, Florida, and Highlands and Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Gilbert B. Dickey died on April 15, 2000, at Vanderbilt Hospital,
Nashville. The donor made all funeral and cremation arrangements.
