Biographical / Historical
In 1996, Atlanta, Georgia hosted the Centennial Olympic Games from July 19 to August 4, welcoming over 10,000 athletes from 197 nations. As part of the Olympic Torch Relay, which began in Los Angeles on April 27 and spanned more than 15,000 miles, the Torch passed through Peachtree City, Georgia on July 17. Local residents were selected to carry the Torch through national and community-based programs, including the United Way's Community Heroes Program, Coca-Cola's "Share the Spirit" contest, and Atlanta's Olympic Torch Committee.
To commemorate the event, the Peachtree City Olympic Torch Run Committee, co-chaired by Susan Taylor and Jim Price, coordinated a series of local sporting events and celebrations. These included golf, tennis, BMX, sailing, and other community competitions, supported by local sports organizations and civic groups. All activities were conducted with approval from the Atlanta Committee for Olympic Games and under the oversight of Mayor Bob Lenox.
