Peachtree City Police Department Collection, 1974-2023
Scope and Contents
This collection contains documents, newspaper articles, photographs, and annual reports from 1974 to 2023. There are three annual reports (1982, 1986, and 2005) detailing the growth of the police department through budget analysis and crime statistics. Newspaper and magazine articles cover a variety of topics including the department receiving its first 911 service, the first golf cart in its fleet, and the Officer Friendly Program. Also included are articles on “Peachtree City Named Safest Small City in Georgia” (2023), and “Haskell Barber Reminisces about Peachtree City’s Early Years as City Nears 25th Birthday” (1984). Miscellaneous documents provide a brief glimpse into the department. A f.a.t.s training brochure with the image of two Peachtree City Police Department officers is on the front cover. Various certificates, State of Georgia Public Safety (1989), and Chief Haskell’s Oath of Office (1980)are included. An assortment of photographs of various aspects of policing include accident scenes, charity baseball games, The Olympic Torch Run (1996),The Peachtree City Police Department Color Guard at Turner Field, a 2000 police department group photograph and a 2005 photograph with former President Jimmy Carter and Peachtree City police officers.

Biographical / Historical
Unidentified sources for the collection. The Peachtree City Police Department was established in 1969 under Mayor Ralph Jones. Haskell E. Barber was hired as the first police chief,and Orville Harris, patrolman, on December 8,1969. Chief Barber’s policy of community oriented policing has continued throughout the history of the department. The tradition was maintained in 2015 when the first female police chief, Janet Moon was hired.
